Hello Denali PEAK families!
My name is Kate Lawton and I am one of the advisor teachers at Denali PEAK. I was born in Anchorage and grew up in Palmer. I have lived in Alaska all my life except for my college years, when I was in Oregon. I have Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Oregon, and a Master’s in Teaching from Pacific University (Forest Grove, Oregon).
I started my career at Denali PEAK in the 2015-2016 school year. Prior to that I had taught in a variety of school settings. Over the course of my career, I have taught English/Language Arts in middle school and high school brick-and-mortar schools, as well as to students in an alternative high school program, and to adults seeking to earn GEDs and/or prepare for postsecondary training. I have also taught composition courses at UAA as an adjunct professor.
When I am not at work, I enjoy cooking and baking, reading (I am an avid reader, which is probably no surprise for someone who classroom experience is as an English teacher), hiking, appreciating the beauty of Alaska’s nature, gardening, attending music, theatre, and cultural performances, and traveling.
I am happy to be a part of the Denali PEAK team and to be able to work to assist my students’ families in the process of being their children’s teachers.
